about

A collection of short renaissance and baroque pieces arranged for melodica. I did a few of Bach's fugues with analog synth a few years ago and I've been drawn to the idea of trying to make "serious" music with an unserious instrument since. I've discovered the melodica has a really surprisingly expressive range and I'm quite pleased with how these turned out!

The pieces are mostly arranged for 4 melodicas - 3 standard range melodica parts and a "bass" melodica part. Bass Melodicas do exist, but they're expensive and I find the quality of the tone a bit lacking (each note "scoops" just a little bit, which I feel gives it an unrefined character). To remedy this, I recorded the bass parts in the lowest range my melodica would allow and digitally shifted the pitch down an octave. Along with some creative EQ, I was able to create this new instrument, more similar sounding to a bassoon or pipe organ, which I feel blends well with the rest of the ensemble. The digital limitations are apparent in some ways, but I felt it was a worthy compromise.

I hope you'll enjoy these short works, I had a lot of fun making them! I next plan to do some classical pieces - who knows, I might work my way all the way up to the present with modern works!
